I had the kids make their own spiders for snack.  During their project, we reviewed all the fun facts we had learned  that week.

materials:
Double stuffed Oreos
Pretzels
red frosting (on sale)

We took this time to review all our spider facts. This is a great  science center for preschool.

Spider Web Science Craft

Making Spider Webs

 

This is a simple and fun science craft

materials:

glue

yarn

scissors

web template

* printed on cardstock or matted on construction paper is recommended

 

 

Some could squeeze the glue bottles and some preferred to use a Q-tip and spread the glue that way.

 

Everyone's webs looked different, some of the children were very engaged and some only participated for about 10-15 minutes.

 

The children wanted to cut their own "silk" and others appreciated the precut yarn.

 

Science

 

I made this a science activity by reviewing all our spider facts. Here is an example of some questions I ask during our spider web science craft.  I also had some spider books opened, so they could also have a visual aid.

 

Teacher: How many body parts do spiders have?

Kids: 2

 

 Teacher: What are they called? 

Kids: thorax and abdomen

 

Teacher: What are webs made of? 

Kids: silk

 

Teacher: Where does the silk come from?

 Kids: the spinneret

 

Teacher: Where is the spinneret located?

Kids: in their Abdomen

 

Teacher: Why do spiders make webs?

 Kids: to catch their food

 

Teacher: What else do spiders use their silk for?

 Kids: to make protect their babies (egg sacks)

 

 

I had one child tell me "I don't want to make a web, I am making a spider egg sack"

Art

Spider hand prints:

The used a Q-tip to make the eyes. I let them choose 6 or 8.

 

 

I had them make a web with yarn and glue. Great for fine-motor Skills!  

 

Marble painting

Make a web and have a discussion about webs.

Here are some questions I ask my kids while they are marble painting:

1. What are webs made out of?

2. Why do spiders need webs?

3. Why don't spiders stick to their own webs?

 

Great for a center:

Fine motor skills: peeling and sticking

Make a spider and review parts of a spider and other facts.

Why don't spiders stick to their own webs

Why don't spiders stick to their own webs?

I took paper plates, made a web with a marker and then added tape all over it.

The kids touched how sticky the web was. Afterwards we discussed why spider don't stick to their own webs.

The kids took turn walking their spider fingers cautiously around the web so they didn't get stuck to their own trap.

 

Answer to why spiders:

I Googled it and I found that spiders make a web and leave a trail of sticky glue droplets. They are then able to navigate cautiously around their web. At times spiders may encounter a sticky droplet, but are able to quickly lick it right off. Insects on the other hand don't have this privilege. Most insects fly, or hop right into tons of glue droplets making it impossible for them to escape. Resulting to them getting stuck in a sticky situation.

 

The magic School Bus has an awesome 20min video clip called The Magic School Bus Spins a web. It shows the spider make a web and then leave sticky glue droplets as the spider get ready to catch its lunch. I will post the clip for easy access.
