Dental Week Art Project: SMILEY FACES

ART
The children made self-portraits for this weeks art project.

I did this in 2 small groups. I had the children do all of the work. Most of my kids can cut pretty well by now, so the only prep done before hand was cut out heads using the cricut.

The children began with cutting out eyes.

Then they colored them to match their eye color.

When mouths were done being cutout, I had the children  color in their gums so their teeth would "stay" on

We then reviewed how many teeth they have. together as a class we say: "10 on the top, 10 on the bottom. 10 + 10 = 20

I had the children either color their hair or cut it.

Dental hygine ideas for preschool and Kindergarten

We were so fortunate to have the tooth fairy come to our classroom and tell us all about sugar bugs, cavities and how to keep our teeth healthy and strong.

They learned how to properly brush their teeth.

Practiced brushing in circular motion.

 Science/Art
Healthy tooth vs. unhealthy tooth
They cut foods out of magazines that helped keep their teeth healthy (white paper with tooth template) and they also cut out pictures of foods that cause them to get cavities and pasted it on their yellow tooth.

MATH
Measuring activity- My tooth brush is # ___ long.
They used cheerios, bears, buttons, cubes, marshmallows and raisins to measure.
Counting and adding teeth
10 teeth on top = 10 teeth on the bottom = 20 teeth total

I bought these posters on Oriental trading

 PLAYDOUGH  - fine-motor skill

Dramatic Play
This is so much fun for me and the kids. My kids were reciting everything I had taught throughout the week, during their free play. One of  the dentists were giving the patient tips how to prevent cavities. Listening to them play was quite a treat.

Science Experiments for preschoolers: cavities and more

Science
Discovering what drinks stain our teeth. WATER? SODA? APPLE JUICE?
I boiled 3 eggs and had them sitting in a bowl with the specified drink. The only drink that did not stain was water.
The children practiced brushing teeth on the hard boiled eggs.

LIFE SKILL- Science experiment
The children discovered that there are foods that stick more to teeth than others. They ate an apple slice, then examined their teeth and brushed the remnants. Then they ate an Oreo cookie, boy was that a mess! They were not allowed to leave this center until they successfully brushed all the chocolate off their teeth. It was great practice. One of my kids said this is taking forever. I replied with, "we have to take our time brushing our teeth. Sometimes it's hard to see all the sugar bugs, and if you don't brush your teeth long enough all over, you'll get a cavity.
